Born in Recife, Lara Klaus is a percussionist, drummer, singer, songwriter and educator. Dedicated especially to the study and teaching of percussion instruments from the Northeast of Brazil, Lara was part of several groups and played with renowned Brazilian artists, among them Elba Ramalho and Moraes Moreira.
She participated in important music festivals around the world alongside Brazilian artists, such as the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), and regularly performs shows and teaches percussion and music workshops, inside and outside Brazil. Currently based in Montreal, Canada, Lara is part of the international organization Jeunes Musiciens du Monde (JMM) where she teaches percussion workshops for immigrant and vulnerable children and teenagers.
In 2020, the artist participated in the Syli d’Or de la Musique du Monde festival, in Montreal (Canada), winning the ”Public Favorite Award” and ”Coup De Couer” from the Arts Council of Montreal. In March 2021 Lara released the single “Poeira Estelar”, featuring the Brazilian singer Flaira Ferro. Lara signs the musical production of the track, which is co-produced by Tomaz Alves (Bacurau and Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus). In 2018, Lara released her first album, “Força do Gesto”, which featured a musical production by Tomaz Alves and herself. The album features 10 songs, 8 of which are partnerships in which she shares lyrics and music with Zé Manoel, Mavi Pugliesi and André Macambira, among others. Multi-instrumentalist, she explores different combinations of percussion, from drums to various instruments with African roots, as well as singing and playing guitar. Klaus is also a founding member of LADAMA, an ensemble formed by 4 women from 4 countries (United States, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil) that uses music as a tool for social transformation and empowerment of women and young people. The group has released two albums, “LADAMA” (2017) and “OYE MUJER” (2020), the second with musical production by the renown Kassin. In addition to giving workshops and masterclasses at universities, schools and institutions around the world, the group has toured South America, North America and Europe, having played in important music festivals such as WOMEX and Monterey Jazz Fest. In 2018, the group had one of their songs selected for the soundtrack of the video game “Fifa 2019” and the following year they recorded the webserie Tiny Desk Concerts, in the USA.
